Hard Space

Definition

A word space that prevents a line break between the two elements it joins. Also called a non-breaking space. Hard spaces are used to keep initials together (e.g. W. B. Yeats), to bind a number to its unit (e.g. 3 km), or to prevent widows and orphans.
